Artist Statement

In oil painting, the term “representational art” refers to images that are clearly recognizable. As a kid, I was fascinated with drawing and painting subjects as they were. That same fascination has taken me to where I am today as an artist. My paintings of everyday life, traditional landscapes, figurative, still life and portraits try to interpret what I see through a painterly hand. Primarily, as a plein air artist (outdoor painter), I interpret what I see in oil on canvas in real time and in the moment. Hopefully, this translates into a painting with a good center of interest, depth and color value but, most importantly, gives the viewer a sense of the mood of that place in time. The surface of the painting should tell the person viewing it, in seeing it’s brush strokes, that this is clearly an original oil painting. Finally, my signature in the corner of the finished piece is my seal of approval for this painting to go on through the ages – long after this painter is gone. I think about this a lot while working on a piece. It makes me try harder to make every painting worthy of the future.
